Regular Season Ends, Heads to Playoffs

Published: Dec 10, 2014

The final week of the season provided lots of excitement and resolved all four playoff spots.  The Burgundy division was resolved with a high scoring 97-71 win by the Joe Gibbs Good Head over the Mansfield Onanists.  The Good Head win thier seventh division title and third in five years.  They also finish the season with the best record and get the #1 seed.  At the bottom of the division, the Norsemen came alive and defeated the Sean Taylor's Ashes, 55-7.  It won't keep the Norsemen out of the Toilet Bowl for the first time since 2003.

The Gold Division was down to two teams for the division title.  The Gallic Warriors left the door open, when they lost to the Crusaders 40-17.  They were hurt by Peyton Manning going negative for the first time since 2008.  The Whiskey Tango took their league leading 2 ties in an effort to spoil the Fighting Squirrels playoff chances.  Warren wins 29-12.  This gives the Gallic Warriors their first ever division title and sends them to the playoffs for the second straight season.  In his first year in the league Brian falls just short of returning the Squirrels to the playoffs for the first time in 10 years.

The most open division was the White Division which had three teams that could win.  The Pretend I'm Not Here would win the division with a win.  But depending on their kicker Monday night, they fell two points short and lost to the Woodland Rangers, 17-15.  This meant that whoever wins between the Sacks on the Beach and MeggaMen would win the division.  (For Warren, this is the correct use of whoever vs whomever).  In the five years these two teams have been in the same division, they have split every season.  This continued this week with the Sacks avenging thier week 4 loss, with a 60-42 win.  This gives the Sacks their third White Division title and seventh overall.  The Pretend back into the wild card spot, giving Joel and Ann-Marie their first playoff appearance.

A Note About Tie Breakers

To clarify the tie-breaker process.  First you order each division 1 to 4.  In the Burgundy and White Divisions this is easy, everyone has different records.  In the Gold Division there are three teams at 8-6; the Crusaders, the Fighting Squirrels and the Gallic warriors.  The next tie-breaker is head to head amonst the tied teams.  The Crusaders and Warriors come out at 3-1, while the Squirrels end up 0-4.  This eliminates the Squirrels and restarts the process with just the Gallic Warriors and Crusaders.  Head to head they are 1-1.  Both have a division record of 4-2.  In strength of victory, the teams the Warriors beat were 55-53-4 .509 for the Crusaders 49-60-3 .451.  So the Warriors win the division.  Then you start over to determine who finished second.  In this case the Crusaders swept the Squirrels, 2-0.  So the Crusaders finish second and the Squirrels third.

Then to determine the wild card you only look at second place teams.  The Onanists only had 7.5 wins, while the Pretend and Crusaders both had 8.  The Squirrels are not in this tie-break because they finshed third in their division.  In their head to head meeting the Pretend beat the Crusaders, so they claim the Wild Card.

Playoff matchups

#1 Joe Gibbs Good Head vs #4 Pretend I'm Not Here

The Pretend crushed the Good Head in week 8, 62-0.  Since then these two teams have headed in opposite directions.  The Pretend ended the season 2-4, while the Good Head went on a 5-1 run.  In the last five weeks, the Good Head have posted three of the top four scores in the league this season, while the Pretend have been under 80 three times.  The Pretend have dropped their power rating by 7 points, the Good Head have jumped 17.  The Pretend have won the last three meetings but the Good Head lead all-time, 28-15.  They have never met in the post season.

#2 Sacks on the Beach vs #3 Gallic Warriors

The Sacks won earlier meeting 29-5 and lead the all-time series 10-5.  The Sacks missed the playoffs last year but this is their 10th playoff appearance since joining in 2000.  This is only the second time the Gallic Warriors have made the playoffs, last year they lost in the first round.  The Warriors are limping into the playoffs having lost three of their last four, the Sacks have won three out of four.

Toilet Bowl: Norsemen vs Woodland Rangers

The Norsemen are in their third Toilet Bowl, but first once since 2003.  They are 1-1 all-time in those games.  The Woodland Rangers are also in their third Toilet Bowl but second in a row.  They have lost both previous games.  The Rangers have never beaten the Norsemen in their five meetings.  The winner of this game will get the #1 overall pick.  The Norsemen last had #1 pick in 1994, the Woodland Rangers have never had it.
